Building a High School for Capella House, The School of Possibilities.
Capella House is currently a pre-primary and primary school in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, South Africa.
When you buy one a tree artwork, ZAR 400 (60-70%, depending on exchange rate) will be donated towards the building of the High School.
The immediate aim is to have two new classrooms for January 2024 costing approximately ZAR 600 000. New classrooms will be built in following years to grow a full high school.
The building focus is to use as many repurposed materials as possible. The classrooms will be completely off grid, relying on solar energy to power electricity. The structures will need to touch the earth lightly, without foundations; inspiring innovative building techniques.
Creating shade
Fish Hoek is a sandy place, located close to the beach and nestled between the hills of Clovelly and Glen Cairn. The south easter wind pounds through in the summer. Since Capella House has been occupying this sandy corner the land has become significantly greener.
A forest of art
The collection is inspired by the growth of trees and their unique qualities; the sound of the wind in their leaves; the curiosity of their ever extending roots; and the musings and imaginings of what could have happened in and under them over their long, seemingly still lives.
Imagine
Together we can accomplish anything. A single tree can contribute to a building that will provide shade and protection for young minds to grow. An artwork on a wall can inspire a shift in perspective, humour or imaginings that will create wonder in one's life.
The artist, Nix Davies and her daughter, live in South Africa.
She has grown to become a collaborative, conceptual artist whose artistry and expertise is in the initiation, instigation and process of bringing an idea to life.
Her philosophies of process lie deep in connecting people to their passions;activating human potential; imagining beyond our current horizon line of understanding and navigating the unknown to reach new territory.
She has been using trees as her medium for over 20 years. This body of work is the beginning of her life's work.
The key philosophies of the project are the power and significance of the individual in the whole; the untapped human potential in community; and exponentiality.
